Project Background

LMI INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH PROJECT

On behalf of the food and beverage processing industry, FPHRC created an LMI data gathering project, which aimed to provide a basis for more effective future human resources planning. The principle purpose of the LMI project is to undertake a detailed Food Processing Industry labour market supply/demand analysis that will provide the basis upon which the FPHRC can better do long range human resources planning on behalf of its industry stakeholders.  As a secondary by-product of this work, there is intention to develop a model for a labour market information retrieval and analysis system using the database developed so that the data can be updated in a timely and strategic way.

The collection of this information and the development of appropriate human resources initiatives, strategies, etc. will benefit from consultation on a national level with the industry and other organizations which have already established and implemented similar programs.

The outputs of this project will provide the following benefits for industry stakeholders:

  • A comprehensive analysis and assessment of current supply/demand issues affecting the industry.
  • Occupational profile of the industry broken down by sub-sector such as beverages.
  • Compensation analysis – by occupational groupings and sub-sector.
  • Demographic characteristics of the industry – age breakdown; representation by segments of Canadian labour force; etc.
  • Process or model that could be utilized for the updating of labour market information on an ongoing or as needed basis.
  • Ability to update and/or collect relevant labour market supply/demand data when industry stakeholders require it.
  • The LMI data gathering and analysis process will provide a platform for the more effective collection and use of the relevant labour market information required by the industry in the future, using the results of this project as its principle database.
  • Will enable the FPHRC to engage in more effective human resources planning and potential development and implementation of a longer term food processing industry human resources strategy.

This initiative is essential in addressing the challenges facing the FPHRC and the industry. It allows the industry to effectively deal with human resources recruitment, and retention and development issues that they are currently, and will increasingly be facing, because of Canada’s changing demographics.
